Concrete is one of the oldest building materials in the world. It can last for centuries, so it’s no wonder humans have used it in everything from Roman temples to Mayan buildings to modern skyscrapers. Entire books have been written about the history of concrete; here’s a slimmed-down overview.

First, a definition: Concrete is a material made by combining crushed stone, sand, or other types of particulate materials with a fluid binder and giving the mixture time to harden. Throughout history, humans have used many different ingredients when making concrete; more below on how the recipes have changed over time.

Some of the oldest known concrete structures are in modern-day Syria and Jordan; they were built by members of the Nabataean Kingdom beginning around 6500 B.C. They made their concrete with hydraulic lime and used it for underground cisterns to store drinking water. During the same time period, people living in southeastern and central Europe built houses with concrete floors.

There’s a vigorous debate about whether the ancient Egyptians used concrete when building the pyramids. Some historians claim that the Egyptians made concrete from crushed limestone, clay, and other ingredients which they used to create some of the giant blocks used in the pyramids. Other historians say that proponents of this theory have rocks in their heads and the older idea that all the blocks were cut from solid stone is the correct one.

About the same time in ancient China, people used sticky rice to develop a type of mortar that’s unusually long-lasting and water-resistant. They used this mortar to hold together building materials such as stone and wood, including in some of the oldest portions of the Great Wall. There’s some debate about when the Chinese started using a building material that definitely counts as concrete, but one suggestion is during the Han Dynasty, which lasted from 206 B.C. to 220 A.D.

People in ancient Greece and ancient Assyria sometimes used concrete from about 1400 B.C. onward, but the ancient Romans were the ones to take concrete to the next level. They used volcanic ash, quicklime, and pumice as ingredients, and from about 300 B.C. to 476 A.D. they constructed numerous buildings, aqueducts, and other structures that used concrete. Two of the most famous examples are the Colosseum and the Pantheon; even today the Pantheon’s unreinforced concrete dome is the largest in the world. Roman structures built with concrete still exist throughout Europe; they have lasted so long in part because concrete made from Roman recipes is resistant to fracturing and saltwater damage.

The history of Mayan construction is not nearly as well documented as that of Rome, but we know that the Mayans used concrete when building the city of Uxmal sometime between 500 and 1000 A.D. Uxmal contains many highly decorated buildings that have survived in the tropical Central American climate for more than 1000 years.

For well over 1000 years after the collapse of the Roman Empire in 476 A.D., concrete was used far less often in European construction, and much of the concrete produced was of lower quality than the Roman versions. In the 1750s, however, an English civil engineer named John Smeaton used hydraulic lime to make concrete for possibly the first time since the Roman era. He used this concrete to build a 72-foot-tall lighthouse on the southern English coast. The lighthouse was in use for more than a century; it was decommissioned in 1882 not because of any problem with the building itself but because the rocks underneath it were eroding.

The next big news in concrete was the development of Portland cement in the 1820s, also in England. This version is still used today. In France, Joseph Monier drew on earlier advancements to develop reinforced concrete in 1849. From then on the use of concrete only expanded. Some notable concrete “firsts” include:

The American architect Frank Lloyd Wright also helped to popularize concrete, starting with his 1908 Unity Temple.

Throughout the twentieth century concrete only got more popular. The construction of the Hoover Dam used more than 4 million cubic yards of concrete, and the Sydney Opera House, completed in 1973, has concrete ribs. Other advancements included colored, pre-stressed, thin-shelled, and decorative concrete. Today concrete is the most-used building material in the world; in 2021 a Dutch company even built a 3D-printed concrete home!

However, cracks, especially anything more than the small occasional crack, are not always a natural outcome of having concrete foundations , patios, sidewalks, driveways, stairways, and pool decks. 4. Inferior Drying

Every concrete contractor should give pavements adequate time to dry and strive for optimal drying conditions (basically, days that are warm and dry). However, if your concrete is poured when the weather is slightly too cold, drying issues such as eventual cracks could result.

If you’re doing the concrete work yourself, go with one bucket of water per 10-pound bag of cement. Of course, your mix may still get watery despite your best efforts. Scoop in a handful of cement one at a time to create more thickness.

6. Shifting Ground

Earthquakes are an obvious cause of ground movement causing cracked concrete. However, even regularly shifting tree roots, soil, and dirt under driveways and concrete foundations result in heaving (the upward movement of concrete) and settling. Over time, severe cracks may occur.

Tree roots are actually a serious cause of concrete cracks. They mess with the soil and can lift pavements. To minimize this problem, remove trees around where your concrete is and add more dirt before pouring. Other causes of shifting ground can be blasts, so beware if you're doing yard work or home projects along these lines.

7. Bad Joint Placement

Poorly placed or poorly cut joints can lead to an explosion of cracks. The purpose of the joints is to allow the concrete space to grow and shrink, but problems occur if you get them wrong. Aim for two or three times the slab thickness (in inches) to determine joint location. If your slab is six inches, you would have joints cut every 12 to 18 feet for a secure concrete foundation. Though you can also accomplish this with pavers, it's a bit more cost-effective to simply resurface. As with any repair, a proper cleaning is the first step. Concrete is such a critical element in what we know as the built environment. It’s the world’s most commonly used building material, and the second-most used material in the world after water. From the roads we drive on to the pipelines used to deliver water, concrete may very well be the MVP of modern civilization. It has various applications, ranging from massive structures to decorative uses. What differentiates structural from ornamental concrete in terms of strength? Who sets the standards for how concrete is designed, mixed, and poured? Is it the engineer? Perhaps it’s a concrete contractor.

Establishing a New Path

It’s hard to imagine that there was a time when concrete wasn’t viewed favorably in construction. There were no standards for concrete formation leading to inconsistent performance. This led to a 1904 editorial by Charles C. Brown in a fall issue of the magazine Municipal Engineering where he called for the forming of an organization to bring order to the industry by establishing standards for concrete. Within a few months, the National Association of Cement Users was formed in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Setting the Standard

After adopting a constitution and bylaws, the association began to hold regular conventions and publish the proceedings. In 1910, they formally adopted the “Standard Building Regulations for the Use of Reinforced Concrete” which was their first building code. In the following years, they would adopt more standards and begin publishing a monthly journal of convention proceedings. In order to better reflect their mission and work, the NACU Board of Directors decided to change the organization’s name to the American Concrete Institute.

Today, the American Concrete Institute is all about crafting and distributing consensus-based knowledge on concrete, both in design and construction. Getting the Right Mix

Concrete is a composite material usually made from fine and coarse aggregates (sand and rocks), water, and cement. The materials usually form a slurry that has a particular viscosity or workability, allowing it to be poured and molded into various shapes. The cement also reacts with the other materials, causing the entire mixture to cure or harden. As the mixture cures, it grows stronger. Depending on the application, concrete needs to gain a minimum strength to meet its intended design requirements. Concrete performance, or lack thereof, is depending on several factors:

Proportions of its components: How much cement is used relative to the water and aggregates.

What You Need to Know About Concrete Mixing Ratios

If you want to make concrete that is durable and strong, you will certainly want to use the proper concrete mixing ratios. The basic concrete mixing ratios are 1:2:3, 1:3:3, and 1:2:4. The previously mentioned mixing ratios are based on the proportion of cement, sand, and stone used in order. The PSI strength you need will determine the ratio you utilize. To produce concrete without the help of a concrete contractor, you will need Portland cement, sand (coarse or fine), stone (aggregate), and water (cool works best).

Mixing Concrete for a Slab

1:3:3 (cement: sand: stone) is one of the best concrete mixing ratios for producing a 3000 PSI mix. The mixing ratio is not only appropriate for a shed slab, but it also works for the majority of footings, concrete patios, and foundation walls. Combining the cement, sand, and stone creates a paste that will coat the stone and fuse the materials after the mix solidifies. To produce a yard of concrete (27 cubic feet) that is 3000 PSI, you will need to mix:

517 lbs. of cement (234kg)
1560 lbs. of sand (707kg)
1600 lbs. of stone (725kg)
32 – 34 gallons of cool water (132L)

The mixing ratio above will produce concrete that is durable, long-lasting, and appropriate for the majority of concrete projects. One cubic yard of concrete will fill an area that is 8 feet wide by 10 feet long and 4 inches thick. Concrete that is six inches thick per cubic yard will fill an area of 52 square feet at 5 inches thick.

Steps To Keep Weeds Out From Between Concrete Pavers

Concrete pavers are very popular for outdoor walkways and patios. They can mimic the appearance of more expensive materials and come in many different shapes and colors. If there is any excess on the pavers themselves, use a leaf blower to remove it. Be sure you complete this step before misting the sand with water. Otherwise, the excess sand will stain the pavers, and because water activates the binding agents, you will never be able to remove it.

Once you have confirmed that the sand is only between the paver joints, the next step is to mist the sand between the pavers to activate the bonding agents. Using a garden sprayer, do small sections at a time, and do not wait more than three minutes between applications. Each section requires three to four applications to produce the strongest bond. Avoid spraying so much water that you make puddles. Once you have finished this step and adequately misted the joints, wait 24 hours before walking on the pavers again.

What Do You Have To Do Before Applying the Polymeric Sand?

You can save a step by applying the sand at the same time the pavers are installed. However, if the pavers are already installed and you notice weeds growing up in between them, you can still apply the polymeric sand retroactively. Before you do so, however, you have to kill and remove the weeds first.

You do not need fancy herbicides to kill the weeds between your pavers. White vinegar is an effective weed killer because of its acidic content. It is also non-toxic and easy to use; most people already have some in their kitchens. Put the vinegar into a spray bottle with a teaspoon of dish soap, then spray it on the weeds. The dish soap helps the vinegar stick to the weeds so that it works more effectively. The weeds absorb the vinegar better if you wait for the prime hours of sunshine and heat before spraying them.

Once the vinegar is on the weeds, they are pretty much done for. You can pull them up right away, or you can wait until they die off completely. It depends on the time frame in which you want to complete the project. It may be difficult to get a good grip on the weeds to pull them out completely using your hands alone. Although the machines are incredibly efficient, they emit high-pressure water that can damage surfaces if the proper procedures aren’t followed. By following the correct techniques for pressure washing, you can clean concrete driveways without causing damage.

Which Pressure Washer To Choose

Pressure washers come in various sizes and psi ratings, but you do not need a top-of-the-line machine to clean a residential driveway. Electric models can save you a trip to the gas station, but they’re not as powerful as gas models and require a rugged extension cord to operate. Electric washers typically provide 1400-1700psi, and gas models produce 2000-3000psi.

A powerful electric washer can clean concrete if it isn’t saturated with mildew and grime. Oil stains, paint and stubborn mildew stains are more challenging to remove with low pressure, and you can clean a driveway faster with a gas-powered machine that runs around 2000 psi.
